Three warriors—Shaolin monk Liu Kang, actor Johnny Cage, and soldier Sonya Blade—are chosen by thunder god Raiden to compete in the Mortal Kombat tournament. Outworld has won nine times; a tenth victory allows Emperor Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm. They battle sorcerer Shang Tsung's deadly fighters to save humanity.
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation - 1997
Immediately after the first film's victory, Emperor Shao Kahn violates rules by opening a portal to invade Earthrealm, resurrecting Queen Sindel to merge the realms in six days. Raiden and survivors Liu Kang, Sonya, Kitana, and new allies Jax race to close the portal and battle Kahn's generals to prevent annihilation.
Mortal Kombat - 2021
MMA fighter Cole Young, marked for death by Outworld's Sub-Zero, discovers his heritage and joins Earthrealm's champions—Sonya Blade, Jax, Liu Kang, and Kung Lao—under Raiden's guidance. As Shang Tsung sends assassins to eliminate them before the tournament, Cole unlocks his powers to defend Earthrealm from conquest.
